Spookathon!

Have you heard all about Alive’s upcoming charity Spookathon? All the details can be found here: alivehealth.co.uk/spookathon

Alive receives a charity certificate

Rockinghorse charity certificateNot that we wish to blow our own trumpet or anything, but we were pretty chuffed to receive this certificate from one of our favourite charities, Rockinghorse (http://www.rockinghorse.org.uk). We do enjoy helping charities, and having fun in the process whether it’s a charity classathon, bake sale or sponsored event! We’d love to hear from any charities, especially in Brighton and the surrounding areas, who might like to benefit from our next charity event, which will be our “Spookathon” in October! Please contact info@alivehealth.co.uk if you’d like to put your cause forward.

Cardiac Risk in the Young Bridges walk

Alive Charity WalkOn Sunday 15th July Joseph from Alive Sales Team took part in CRY (Cardiac Risk in the Young) 6th annual London Bridges Walk.
The route crosses 7 Thames bridges and includes great views of at least 12 of London’s famous landmarks, representing the 12 young sudden cardiac deaths that occur each week in the UK. These landmarks include County Hall, the Houses of Parliament, the London Eye, Somerset House, St Paul’s Cathedral, Royal Festival Hall, the Tate Modern, Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, Southwark Cathedral, the Tower of London, City Hall and HMS Belfast.

Joseph completed the walk with the Myheart group, people from Myheart are people that have been diagnosed with heart conditions.
The main aim for the day is to raise awareness in the UK for Cardiac Risk in the Young.
On Sunday +800 people walked the 5 mile course, many did it for a loved one they lost prematurely, it can be a very emotional day for some!
The sun shined on everyone during the walk, which was relief considering that weather we’ve had this year.
So far the Myheart group have raised £500 for the walk and money is still coming in, if you would like to sponsor them please click on this link:  http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/team/Myheart

A lucky mum! Charity Walk for CRY Joseph from Alive does Charity Walk
Our Joseph!Joseph’s story: Sunday 16th March 2008, I had a cardiac arrest, my heart stopped for 7 minutes. I collapsed at the finishing line of the Hastings half marathon.
I deemed myself a fairly healthy young man, I had run the London Marathon in 2007, I was a part of a run group and I was training for the New Marathon at the time.
I was lucky that it happened in Hastings at an event where defibrillators were at hand to shock my heart back into normal rhythm.
After my cardiac arrest I was put into intensive care for a couple of days, waking up in hospital on the Wednesday surrounded by family and friends.
On the day it had happened my family were told to expect the worst, they drove to Hastings a 3 hour journey expecting to be told that I had passed away when they arrived.
People that have cardiac arrest only 1.78% make it alive to hospital, so the odds weren’t good!
I had to stay in hospital for 3 weeks over during the Easter holiday, for the my body to recover from the trauma and for the doctors to determine why someone so young had a cardiac arrest.
I was then diagnosed with a condition called Brugada Syndrome and had a defibrillator implanted in me, also known as an ICD.
4 Years later, I still have to pinch myself that is happened to me, outside of work I raise awareness for CRY and supports others with similar conditions.

Brighton Marathon

Date: 15 April 2012

On April 15th 2012 Brighton is hosting its 3rd Marathon with people competing from all over the world.  We catch up with our very own PT and Marathon Man, Joe Addison who will be competing this year, first at Brighton and then in the London Marathon one week later.  There is a twist… Joe will be running barefoot!  Joe started training for the Marathon in 2008 and ran the London Marathon in 2009.  However due to knee problems switched to barefoot running and has already run 3 Marathons plus lots of shorter distances, shoeless for various charities.  Joe explained that when he was a ‘shoe’ runner, he used to suffer quite badly with runners knee and IT Band syndrome and his research led him to barefoot running.  Since he discovered barefoot running, he suffers much less aches and pains and is also faster over 5k, 10k and marathon distances and hasn’t looked back since!  This year Joe will be raising money for Macmillan cancer Care in memory of his Dad who passed away in 2010.  If you would like to sponsor Joe and support this very worthwhile charity then you can go to: www.justgiving.com/barefootaddison or text BFJA80 and the amount (eg £10).  Good Luck Joe!

Charity Classathon success

Well we are exhausted but elated after an amazingly successful first ‘Charity Classathon’ at Alive Fitness and Natural Health last Sunday 5th February. The turnout was absolutely fantastic, far exceeding our tentative hopes (particularly after seeing the weather forecast the night before)

Twenty people braved the snow and arrived at 9am fully clad in legwarmers and sweatbands for Zumba! Barry ‘Snake Hips’ Randall taught a simply brilliant class. We all laughed and sweated a lot. Jeff Scott then taught spinning with some brave souls getting straight onto their bikes from Zumba. Matt Dunn Allen yoga class came next with again twenty people packing out the studio. A much needed stretch was had by all!

Matt Dunn then taught a super high energy Boxercise, again to a packed out studio of nearly twenty people, amazing! Some then stayed on and were joined by more to make over twenty for Jenny Dunn’s kettlebell class. Lots of swinging, pressing, lunging and laughing ensued. Finally Jenny Dunn then taught Core Stability to a smaller crowd, stretching and relaxing into the end of the event.

We were then joined by Local Green Councillor Phelim McCafferty. He kindly came along to support us and make a donation.

Throughout the day a delicious range of cakes lovingly made by Jenny Dunn and members Anthony Boon, Diane Palmer and Laura Pavey were on sale. Raffle tickets have also been sold up until the draw on Sunday 12th February. Everyone has been incredibly generous with their donations, we are really overwhelmed. The total was just over £1000.

The final figure will be announced on Sunday 12th February. This total will be split equally between Compassion in World Farming and Rockinghorse Children’s Charity.

We did a charity raffle and the following people won…

  • David Adams – 10 free classes
  • Hannah Whiley – OMG spray tan with LauraLashes
  • John Owen – Reiki / Reflexology with LauraLashes
  • Mandy Jackson – Free PT with Jenny
  • Tad Osbourne – Free PT with Matt
  • Chris Bailey – Free PT with Toby

The club was absolutely buzzing on Sunday, such a brilliant atmosphere, everyone worked really hard but also had such a great time. There was such a great turnout and we have received wonderful feedback from members and those who came along to support. We will definitely be running another charity event sometime this year, watch this space…….

We were amazing at the response and are totally grateful to everyone who took part on the day… we had mucho fun and laughs which you can see on our youtube channel

Huge THANK YOU to Jenny Dunn for making this such a huge success and for everyone who took part :)
